Stone & Bone Spears

IMG_0041.jpg

“Pre-contact style spears crafted to be reminiscent of Native American hunting weapons. They are 68” in length. The stone examples started with a knapped chalcedony (jasper, agate) piece which was ground to the desired shape and then hafted. The bone examples simply used bone which was ground to shape and polished. The binding is rawhide. The shafts were cut from rough birch or ash and drawshaved and abraded to an acceptable level of smoothness. They are not uniformly round and are somewhat tapered near to the spearhead. Finishing usually employs pine resin, hide glue, beeswax, bear grease or tallow, oxide and vegetable pigments and linseed oil. If needed I will use modern fastening, sealing and decorating products to protect and enhance my work although I attempt to remain in the correct time period with materials and technique.”
